Abstract

The world’s population is ageing. According to the WHO1 the number of people aged 60 and over is expected to double between 2000 and 2050, resulting in more than one in five people being 60 years or older in 2050, with 80% living in low- and middle-income countries. In South Africa, the estimated proportion of people over 60 rose with 1.34% for the period 2002–2003 to 3.0% for 2016–2017, with approximately 8.1% of the population being 60 years and older in 2017.2
